Through him then let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that ac- Page 23 knowledge his name" (Heb. 13:12, 15, RSV). Thanks and praise cannot be offered by word without also being offered by deed. The cross certainly means that the members of the community can no longer live for themselves.

Either way, his self-offering requires our response. It is the unanimous witness of the New Testament writings that the community is called to offer itself as wholly and unreservedly as Jesus Christ offered himself to God for all creation. The self-offering of the community in joyful response to God in Christ may be regarded as the heart of the community's own priestly work for the renewal of the creation. The priesthood of all believers is thus a response, a sacrifice of thanks and praise. A radically new center of loyalty is created for the community which by faith receives Christ's priestly self-offering.
